Lifestyle + Wrapped Newborn - Pittsburgh

Writer's picture: Allison PayneAllison Payne

When I first started out in newborn photography I knew I wanted to offer the option for families to have both a lifestyle newborn session AND get those beautiful wrapped images all in the comfort of their own home. It was something I desperately looked for when welcoming my second son but just couldn't find.

Going into my third year as a photographer I am happy to note that this is probably my most popular newborn session type.

Now let's go through what to expect during a lifestyle + wrapped newborn session.

Prior to your session I will provide you with a wardrobe and session prep guide which helps to get not only you but also your home ready for your session. Along with the prep guides you will receive a questionnaire. The information you provide is a great way for me to get to know your family and also where you will share color and prop requests for the wrapped portion of your session.

As with all of my newborn sessions, the lifestyle + wrapped newborn starts at 9:30. This has been the time I have found that works best for my schedule of getting two kiddo's off to school while also getting to your home at a reasonable time. Morning just work better for families as everyone, including baby are generally more rested. Lifestyle + wrapped sessions last a total of 3 - 3.5 hours.

I start these sessions with the lifestyle newborn portion. By starting with lifestyle first this allows spouses to get back to work if they are not on leave and also allows for older siblings to be able to head back to daycare which helps keep their routine somewhat intact for the day. During the lifestyle portion I will get feedback from you on what area's of the house you want to use. Usually the nursery and parent's rooms are the most common spaces but I will also seek out unique locations that offer great light. Throughout the lifestyle portion I will focus on full family images, individual images of parents/siblings with baby as well as baby only. While I get photos of everyone looking at the camera I really like to focus on the connection between the family, so many of the images will be of everyone looking at baby, closeups of you holding their tiny hands and even the silly moments which usually always involve a toddler or a dog! The lifestyle portion lasts about 1 - 1.5 hours.

Once we have completed the lifestyle session it is now time for everyone to get back into their comfy clothes! This is also a great time for baby to get a fresh diaper and a feeding while I set up the in-home studio which takes 15-20 minutes. I bring along everything needed for the wrapped session; lighting, flooring, props and wraps! As soon as everything is set up we are ready to go. For the wrapped portion I bring enough wraps and props for 2-3 setups which ensures a variety for your images. Once we get that first wrap on baby the portion can really fly by. From time to time I may ask for a little assistance from a parent to ensure safety of your baby but for the most part you can sit back, grab a cup of coffee and relax.

It will take me another 15-20 minutes to pack everything up but as soon as that is done your session is complete. From there I will have your beautiful gallery to you in just a week or two!

Of course I hope I answered any questions you have on how the lifestyle + wrapped session works but if there is anything more I can clarify, please let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you about an upcoming newborn session!
